REGINA PACIS
The first Sunday after Easter is called "Divine Mercy Sunday". Jesus appeared to a polish nun, Saint Faustina, in 30's and gave her many messages about his unfathomable Mercy and thus asked the Church to establish the great Feast commemorating His unimaginable Mercy. For thos who would like to know more detail, please check on the website.
In today's gospel reading, Thomas doubted the apostles saying they saw the risen Christ.
Thomas was absent when the Lord appeared to them and he insisted that he would never believe until he put his hand in His wounds.
When Jesus came again to His disciples and said to Thomas; Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe." Thomas cried out, "My Lord, My God!"
Since there is dishonorable idiom in English, "doubting Thomas", so I had thought that he is with less faith. But I've found out that he has stronger faith than the others when we read the gospel. Then, why he claimed that he would not believe the risen Saviour unless he touch the wounds?
It was because he was "jealous" that Jesus appeared to them while he was absent. We, too, become jealous when we find out that we are the only ones who were not invited to the party, dinner and so on. Same thing.
Even though his childish behavior disgraced himself, he was indeed humble man and acknowledged and repented his fault immediately which enabled him to step higher than anyone in faith then. When Jesus appeared to him, Thomas said to Jesus, "My Lord, My God!", but he is the very first one to call Jesus "God". Most of the disciples knew that He is the Son of God, but none of them yet recognized that Jesus is the God.
Also, we have to take notice that Jesus is not blaming anyone at all even though most of them had ran away when Jesus was crucified. Rather, He says "Peace be with you".
Full of good lessons for us.
